Will my dog enjoy MeloPup and what’s the science behind the playlist?
Dogs really do like music, but it’s not as simple as tuning in to any old radio station or playlist!
Scientists found out that dogs prefer very specific kinds of tunes, and they certainly don't love every genre or every kind of sound that we do.
Aggregating all of the available studies, its seems that pretty much all large studies show that dogs enjoy soothing and classical music. High pitched sounds and low rumbling beats are out!
research by psychologist Deborah Wells of Queens University in Belfast for a Psychology Today article. Wells examined dogs’ reactions to hearing modern pop music, classical music, and heavy metal while living in a shelter environment. She found that they might enjoy the music—depending on what kind it is.
The dogs listening to pop music showed did not seem to have any type of reaction. The heavy-metal tunes prompted barking and agitation with classical and chilled music did show calming effects. “It is well established that music can influence our moods,” Wells summarised. “Classical music, for example, can help to reduce levels of stress, whilst grunge music can promote hostility, sadness, tension, and fatigue.”
Another study was carried out by the Scottish SPCA and the University of Glasgow in 2015 and involved two groups of dogs being examined over a period of two weeks in a rescue and rehoming centre. One group of dogs was observed in silence, whilst the other had classical music played into their kennels. The conditions were then switched in the second week.
In both groups the dogs' stress levels, measured through heart rates, saliva samples and observation of behaviour, decreased significantly after listening to music.
The dogs also spent less time standing and barking when the music was being played.
